The Complete JLPT N3 Kanji List (373 Kanji)

Here are the 373 kanji the JLPT N3 adds on top of the 246 N5 and N4 kanji. The JLPT hasn't published an official list since 2010, so this is the list most courses and Jisho.org use. Fuji is still adding N3 cards, so the kanji it doesn't teach yet are marked coming soon.

How to Study JLPT N3 Kanji: 6 Advanced Strategies

1. Master Compound Kanji (熟語)

At N3, individual kanji meanings matter less than how they combine. Learn the most frequent 4-character compounds (四字熟語) and 2-character compounds (熟語) to unlock reading speed.

Fuji Learning approach: Study kanji in context with example compounds in each card.

2. Focus on Production (Writing)

N3 requires writing more kanji than N4. Practice writing 80-100 of the most common N3 kanji by hand to develop muscle memory and stroke order accuracy.

Fuji Learning approach: Use spaced repetition to reinforce both recognition and recall.

3. Learn Multiple Readings Systematically

N3 kanji often have 3+ readings. Rather than memorizing all at once, learn one reading thoroughly, then add additional readings in context through vocabulary practice.

Fuji Learning approach: Each kanji includes all major readings and example words to build familiarity.

4. Read Extensively in Japanese

The best way to master N3 kanji is through reading: news articles, blogs, books, and manga. Encounter kanji in real context to cement long-term retention.

Fuji Learning approach: Combine kanji quizzes with extensive reading in parallel.

5. Use Contextual & Etymology Mnemonics

N3 kanji are complex. Create memorable stories or visual associations combining the meaning with the shape. The more personal the mnemonic, the better you'll remember.

Fuji Learning approach: Each kanji card includes etymology and meaning breakdown to help you build your own mnemonics.

6. Track Progress with Timed Practice Tests

As you approach your exam date, take full-length practice tests under timed conditions. N3 kanji questions appear mixed with grammar and vocabulary, so practice in that context.

Fuji Learning approach: Use our quiz feature as you build toward exam readiness.
