The story

A hand (又) seizing an ear (耳): ancient soldiers cut off an enemy's ear as proof of a kill. 取る is gentler now: 休みを取る is taking a day off, and 取り皿 are small plates for helping yourself from shared dishes.

Used in 取る (toru, to take), 受け取る (uketoru, to receive), and 取り消し (torikeshi, cancellation)
