The story
申 began as a bolt of lightning splitting the sky, the same shape found in 神, a god. Today it is speech with a bowed head: 申します for "my name is," 申し訳ありません for a deep apology, and 申し込む, to apply.
Used in 申す (mousu, to say, humble), 申し込む (moushikomu, to apply), and 申し訳ない (moushiwakenai, inexcusable/sorry)
