The story

On the road (彳), a hand (寸) grabs a shell, the coin of ancient China, worn down over the centuries into the 日 above it: 得 is gain. Supermarket signs shout お得, a good deal, and 得意 is the skill that pays off for you.

Used in 得意 (tokui, strong point), お得 (otoku, good deal), and 得点 (tokuten, score)
