Fuji Learning
Privacy Policy
Effective October 29, 2026
Fuji Learning ("Fuji", "we", "us") is run by Somei GK (創明合同会社), a company in Kyoto, Japan. This policy explains what we collect when you use fujilearning.com and the Fuji app, why, who helps us run Fuji, and what you can do about it.
In short: we collect what we need to run Fuji and save your progress, we use analytics to understand how Fuji is used and whether our ads work, the free plan shows an ad from Google now and then, we don't sell your personal information, and you can delete your account at any time.
1. What we collect
Without an account, your progress is kept in your browser on your device (in its local storage). It isn't sent to our servers. We still receive analytics about visits (see "Analytics and cookies").
If you make an account, we collect:
- Your account details: your email address, and either your password (stored only as a one-way hash, never readable) or, if you sign in with Google, your Google account ID and the name on your Google account. We don't keep your Google profile photo.
- The display name you choose, a picture picked at random from Fuji's own avatars, when you joined and last signed in, your time zone, and whether you want emails from us.
- Your learning progress, saved so it follows you between devices: the kanji and kana you've learned, your review schedule and history, streaks, XP, levels, badges, quiz scores, daily goals, course and climb progress, the days you studied, your favourites and notes, and whether you use Fuji from your phone's Home Screen.
- How you found Fuji: when you sign up, the campaign or website that sent you (for example, which Google ad) and the first page you visited.
- How many story exercises you've made each day.
If you buy Premium, Stripe handles the payment and your card details; we never see or store your card number. We keep your Stripe customer ID and the state of your plan (which plan, when it renews or ends, and when a free trial ends). Stripe receives your email address.
If you buy Premium in the Android app, Google Play handles the payment; we never see your payment details. We keep the purchase's reference from Google Play (its token and order number) and the state of your plan, which we check with Google.
If you turn on daily reminders, we store the address your browser gives us for sending notifications to that device, with your time zone and the hour you picked.
When we email you, we keep a record of each email: which one, when, to which address, whether it was delivered and opened, and any spam report.
If you report a problem with a question, we keep your report: the question as it was shown to you, the problem you chose and anything you wrote, the lesson it was in, your device type and browser, and your account if you're signed in.
Our servers log each request (the page or action, the response and the time) to keep Fuji running. We use your IP address briefly to stop abuse, such as too many sign-in attempts; we don't store it in our logs.
2. How we use it
- to run Fuji, save your progress and sync it between your devices
- to provide Premium, manage your plan and handle payments
- to send the emails and reminders described below
- to understand how Fuji is used, fix problems and make it better
- to see which ads and websites bring people to Fuji, so we spend wisely on them
- to show ads on the free plan, which help pay for it
- to keep Fuji and your account secure and prevent abuse
- to meet our legal obligations, such as keeping payment records
Where the law asks us for a legal basis, we rely on providing the service you asked for, on our legitimate interest in running, securing, improving and promoting Fuji, and on your consent where it is required.
3. Emails and reminders
If you have an account, we may email you when you've been away for a few days, on the evening a streak of three days or more would end, once when you've caught every kanji the free plan holds, and if you start buying Premium and don't finish. These emails are on when you make an account. Every one has an unsubscribe link, and you can turn them off in Settings.
Our emails are sent by SendGrid, which tells us whether an email was delivered and opened.
Daily reminders on your phone or computer are off unless you turn them on, and you can turn them off at any time in Settings or in your browser.
4. Analytics and cookies
We use three analytics tools to understand how Fuji is used:
- Umami, which runs on our own server. It doesn't use cookies. It records the pages you visit and actions such as starting or finishing a lesson, with your device type, browser and country.
- Plausible, a privacy-focused analytics service. It doesn't use cookies and only reports totals.
- Google Analytics, which uses cookies to tell visits apart. We send it page views and three moments (catching your first kanji, catching ten kanji in one visit, and finishing your first lesson) so we can measure how well our Google ads work. Google may use this information as described in its own privacy policy. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, Google Analytics stores nothing on your device and our ads get no data about you; Google receives only basic measurements without cookies. Anywhere, you can block it with Google's Analytics opt-out browser add-on or by blocking cookies.
Fuji also stores your progress, settings and sign-in in your browser's local storage. That is what makes Fuji work, and it stays on your device unless you sign in.
5. Ads on the free plan
On the free plan, Fuji sometimes takes a short break after a lesson. On fujilearning.com the break can be a video ad from Google AdSense; otherwise it is Fuji's own message about Premium, which collects nothing. Premium has no ads, and there are none on your first day of learning.
Google and its advertising partners use cookies and similar technology to show these ads, to measure them, to limit how often you see the same ad and to prevent fraud. They may show ads based on your interests and your visits to Fuji and other websites, as Google describes at policies.google.com/technologies/ads. We don't give Google your name, email or progress; it receives what your browser sends with each ad, such as your IP address and device details.
In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, Google asks for your consent before using cookies for ads, and personalised ads are shown only if you agree. Anywhere, you can turn off personalised ads in Google's My Ad Center (myadcenter.google.com) and opt out of many advertisers' interest-based ads at optout.aboutads.info. Blocking cookies or using an ad blocker also stops them; Fuji works the same either way.
7. Where your information is kept
Our servers are in the United States, and we are based in Japan. The companies above may process your information in other countries too. Wherever it is processed, we protect it as this policy describes.
8. How long we keep it
We keep your account and progress until you delete your account. Reminder subscriptions are removed when you turn reminders off or your browser stops accepting them. Payment records are kept for as long as tax and accounting law requires, even after an account is deleted. Problem reports are kept so we can fix the questions they're about. If you delete your account, your reports stay, without your account. Analytics is kept in summarised form to compare over time.
9. Your choices and rights
- See and export: Settings, then Data Management, then Export downloads the progress stored on your device. Email us for a copy of everything on your account.
- Correct: change your display name in Settings, or email us to correct anything else.
- Delete: in Settings, under Account, choose Delete account. Your account and its saved progress are deleted straight away, and a running subscription is cancelled. You can also email us from the address on your account and we'll do it within 30 days.
- Stop emails: use the unsubscribe link in any email or the switch in Settings.
- Stop reminders: turn them off in Settings or in your browser.
Depending on where you live (for example in the European Union, the United Kingdom or California), you may also have the right to access, correct, delete or move your information, to object to or restrict how we use it, to withdraw consent, and to complain to your local data protection authority. We'll honour these requests wherever you live; email us and we'll reply within 30 days.
10. Children
Fuji isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you think a child under 13 has made an account, email us and we'll delete it.
11. Security
Fuji uses HTTPS everywhere, stores passwords only as one-way hashes, and keeps sign-in sessions short-lived and revocable. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and will tell you if a breach affects it.
12. Changes to this policy
We'll post any changes here with a new effective date, and tell you by email or in the app before a significant change applies to you.
