The story

A person (亻) standing off to one side: someone other than you. 他 covers everyone and everything else: 他人 is a stranger, 他の means "another," and the その他 box at the bottom of a form means "other."

Used in 他の (hoka no, other), 他人 (tanin, stranger), and その他 (sonota, the rest/others)
