The story

A woman (女) who is good (良): picture parents beaming over their girl. 娘 is a daughter, and a shop's 看板娘, its "signboard daughter," is the cheerful young woman whose smile brings the customers in.

Used in 娘さん (musumesan, someone's daughter), 一人娘 (hitorimusume, only daughter), and 看板娘 (kanbanmusume, a shop's popular young face)
