The story

A person (亻) standing in a row (列): picture one stepping out of the line to show what everyone looks like. 例 is an example: 例えば means "for example", 例外 is an exception, and 例文 is a sample sentence.

Used in 例えば (tatoeba, for example), 例外 (reigai, exception), and 例文 (reibun, example sentence)
