The story

Words (言) beside a blazing fire (炎): picture friends talking late around the hearth. 談 is talk between people, 相談 when you ask someone for advice and 冗談 when you are only joking.

Used in 相談 (soudan, consultation/advice), 冗談 (joudan, joke), and 会談 (kaidan, talks/conference)
