Getting Started
Fuji Learning is a gamified web app that teaches Japanese kanji (漢字) through an interactive card-collection system. Think of it like a Pokédex for kanji: you unlock cards, complete quizzes, and build your personal collection (Jisho) as you learn. The app uses spaced repetition and progressive difficulty to help you master kanji faster.
Fuji is free to start: the first 100 kanji, the hiragana and katakana courses and every kind of quiz cost nothing, with no sign-up or card needed. Fuji Premium unlocks all 2,141 kanji, and every kanji you've learned stays yours either way.
No. Fuji works without an account, so you can start learning straight away: your progress, collection and streaks are saved in your browser on that device. A free account (Google or email) saves them to your account too, so they follow you to every device and survive clearing your browser.
Absolutely! Fuji Learning is designed for learners of all levels, from complete beginners to advanced students. We recommend starting with our Beginner's Guide to understand how the app works, then picking a themed collection that interests you.
Yes! Check out our Beginner's Guide for a step-by-step walkthrough. We also have a Resources page with kanji learning tips and best practices.
Learning & Quizzes
Fuji Learning has 2,141 kanji organized into 144 themed collections covering nature, numbers, people, food, weather, emotions, animals, directions, work, study, and more, including every kanji from JLPT N5 to N1. Each collection is a curated set of kanji around a specific theme. We also have JLPT reference pages (N5 through N1) for exam preparation.
We combine the fun of collecting cards with effective learning science. Instead of boring flashcards, you discover mystery cards through quizzes, track your progress with streaks and XP, and unlock themed card sets. The gamification makes studying feel rewarding and helps you stay consistent.
The JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) has 5 levels: N5 (beginner), N4 (elementary), N3 (intermediate), N2 (upper-intermediate), and N1 (advanced/native-like). Most learners start with N5 and progress upward. If you're a complete beginner, start with any themed collection on the homepage; each one teaches you kanji from scratch.
Fuji Learning helps you master kanji, which is a core component of the JLPT. However, the JLPT also tests grammar, listening, reading, and writing skills. We recommend using Fuji Learning for kanji practice alongside grammar resources and practice tests for best results.
Jisho (辞書, dictionary) is your personal collection of unlocked kanji cards. Click the Collection link in the navbar to view all the cards you've collected. You can review cards here, see your progress, and study cards you've already unlocked. It's your personal Japanese dictionary!
You unlock a kanji card by completing a quiz about that kanji correctly. The quiz asks about the kanji's meaning and reading (pronunciation). Get both right and the card is added to your collection.
If you answer incorrectly, the correct answer is highlighted so you can learn from it. You can try another card right away. There's no penalty; it's all about learning, not perfection!
A streak tracks how many consecutive days you've completed at least one quiz or studied a kanji. Streaks help build consistency and motivation. If you miss a day, your streak resets, so daily practice is encouraged!
XP (experience points) represents your total learning progress. You earn XP by completing quizzes, unlocking new kanji cards, and mastering cards through repeated practice. As you accumulate XP, you level up and unlock achievements and bonuses.
Technical & Data
If you're signed in, your progress is saved to your account and comes back when you sign in again. Without an account it lives only in this browser, so clearing your browser data erases it. Make a free account to keep it safe, or save a backup with Export in Settings, under Data Management.
Yes. In Settings, open Data Management and choose Export to download the progress stored in this browser as a file. Import it on another device or browser to restore your collection, streaks and XP. For a copy of everything on your account, email hello@fujilearning.com.
Yes! Fuji Learning is a Progressive Web App (PWA). Once you visit the site, the service worker caches key assets so you can study offline. You can also install it to your home screen on iOS or Android for an app-like experience.
Fuji Learning works on all modern browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge (both desktop and mobile). For the best experience, keep your browser updated to the latest version.
Fuji Learning is currently a web app (fujilearning.com). You can add it to your home screen on iOS or Android for an app-like experience. Full native apps for iOS and Android are planned for future versions.
Without an account, your progress and preferences stay in your browser on your device. With an account, they're also saved on Fuji's servers so they sync between your devices. Story exercises send the words you're practising (never your name or email) to an AI service that writes the story, and we use analytics, including Google Analytics, to understand how Fuji is used. The details are in our Privacy Policy.
