The story

A roof (宀) over a plant putting down roots (乇): picture the place you settle. 宅 is home: 帰宅 is getting home, 宅配便 is home delivery, and お宅, "your home", gave the world the word otaku.

Used in 自宅 (jitaku, one's home), 帰宅 (kitaku, coming home), and 住宅 (juutaku, housing)
