The Complete JLPT N2 Kanji List (367 Kanji)

Here are the 367 kanji the JLPT N2 adds on top of the 619 kanji from N5 through N3, for 986 in all. The JLPT hasn't published an official list since 2010, so this is the list most courses and Jisho.org use. Fuji is still adding N2 cards, so the kanji it doesn't teach yet are marked coming soon.

How to Study JLPT N2 Kanji: 6 Master-Level Strategies

1. Master Advanced Compound Kanji (漢字熟語)

At N2, you'll encounter advanced 4-character compounds (四字熟語), Sino-Japanese idioms (故事成語), and literary expressions. Focus on frequency over memorization: learn the 300-400 most common compounds first.

Fuji Learning approach: Every N2 kanji card includes the most relevant compounds and idioms with example sentences.

2. Read Authentic Japanese Daily

N2 learners must go beyond textbooks: read NHK Web Easy news articles, simple novels, manga with furigana, and business emails. The more native content you consume, the faster N2 kanji become automatic.

Fuji Learning approach: Use spaced repetition to reinforce kanji seen in real content.

3. Learn Multiple Readings in Context

N2 kanji often have 3-5 readings. Instead of rote memorization, learn each reading through vocabulary, one common word per reading. Context makes readings stick far better than drilling in isolation.

Fuji Learning approach: Each N2 kanji card includes all major readings with example vocabulary.

4. Study Etymology and Radicals

At N2, understanding kanji radicals (部首) and etymology helps you decode unfamiliar kanji you encounter in reading. Learning 50-60 key radicals lets you estimate meaning and break down new characters on sight.

Fuji Learning approach: Combine kanji quizzes with radical and etymology exploration.

5. Connect N2 to Your N3–N4 Foundation

Many N2 kanji share components with kanji you already know. Actively look for these connections: kanji that share radicals, similar sounds, or related meanings. Building a kanji network in your memory is more powerful than isolated memorization.

Fuji Learning approach: Each kanji card shows related characters to help you build a mental network.

6. Simulate Exam Conditions Monthly

N2 is a serious exam. Take timed practice tests once a month in the final 6 months before your exam date. The reading section is long and exhausting; stamina matters as much as knowledge.

Fuji Learning approach: Use our quiz feature regularly to build exam-day reading speed and confidence.
