The story

A basket (其) and the moon (月): picture marking off the moons of a season. 期 is a set stretch of time: 学期 a school term, 期待 hopeful waiting, and 賞味期限, the best-before date on every snack.

Used in 学期 (gakki, school term), 期待 (kitai, expectation), and 期間 (kikan, period)
