The story

A day (日) gone as suddenly (乍) as it came: yesterday. 昨日 is yesterday itself, 昨年 the polite way to say last year, and 一昨日, read おととい, the day before yesterday.

Used in 昨日 (kinou, yesterday), 昨年 (sakunen, last year), and 昨夜 (sakuya, last night)
