The story

A person (亻) standing (立) in an assigned spot: position and rank. 1位 is first place in any ranking, 位置 is a location, and 単位 are both units of measure and the credits a Japanese university student collects.

Used in 順位 (jun'i, ranking), 位置 (ichi, position), and 単位 (tan'i, unit/credit)
