How to Learn Japanese Kanji
Master kanji through spaced repetition, gamified quizzes, and a card-collection mechanic that makes learning feel like discovery.
What is Kanji?
Kanji (漢字) are logographic characters borrowed from Chinese. Unlike hiragana and katakana, each kanji encodes meaning directly: a mini-picture representing a word or concept. There are roughly 2,000 kanji needed for everyday Japanese, but you'll see real progress after learning just 100.
木 (tree) → 林 (grove) → 森 (forest)
More trees stacked = denser woods. This intuitive logic makes kanji memorable once you understand the components.
Learning kanji unlocks native content (books, manga, websites, news) and is a core component of the JLPT proficiency test.
Getting Started
1. Pick a Collection
Choose a themed set like "Nature's Poetry" or "Ancient Counting." Each collection is a curated set of kanji designed around a specific theme.
2. Discover Cards
Pick a mystery card and answer quiz questions about its meaning and reading. The card reveals itself as you answer correctly.
3. Build Your Collection
Correct answers unlock the card into your personal Jisho (dictionary). Keep collecting to complete sets and earn XP.
4. Level Up
Review cards to increase mastery. Each card evolves through bronze, silver, gold, and legendary tiers as you master it.
Tips for Faster Progress
- 01Be consistent. 15 minutes daily beats 2 hours once a week. Small daily sessions build lasting recall.
- 02Learn the radicals. Kanji are built from smaller components. Knowing 木 = tree, 火 = fire, and 人 = person makes new kanji instantly decodable.
- 03See kanji in context. After quizzing, read manga or watch anime. Seeing kanji in real content locks them in.
- 04Don't chase perfection. Aim for 70% mastery on common kanji first. Understanding beats memorization.
