The story

A person (亻) standing next to a splitting division (咅): one becoming two. 倍 is the kanji of multiplication: 二倍 (nibai, double), 三倍 (sanbai, triple). In Japanese gaming culture, 経験値二倍 (keikenti nibai, double XP) gets players excited. 倍率 (bairitsu, magnification) determines how close a telescope brings the stars.
