The story
A hill (阝) where the earth sits firm (坴): solid ground rising from the sea. As an island nation, Japan's relationship with 陸 is defined by coastlines. 大陸 (tairiku, continent) was the mysterious landmass across the sea, source of culture, writing, and Buddhism.
Used in 大陸 (tairiku, continent), 陸地 (rikuchi, land), and 上陸 (jouriku, landing/going ashore)
