The story

Wood (木) beside 反, a hand pushing back: timber pressed flat into a plank. 板 is a board: まな板 for chopping, 黒板 at school, and the 板前 is a chef of Japanese food, the one who stands before the board.

Used in 黒板 (kokuban, blackboard), 看板 (kanban, signboard), and まな板 (manaita, cutting board)
