The story

Shells (貝), the first money, turned over (反) again and again across a counter: buying and selling. 販売 is sales, 通販 is mail order, and Japan has millions of 自販機, vending machines glowing on street corners day and night.

Used in 販売 (hanbai, sales/selling), 自販機 (jihanki, vending machine), and 通販 (tsuuhan, mail order/online shopping)
