The story

The sun (日) over a masu (升), the square wooden box sake is sometimes served in: picture the sun lifting clear of the box at dawn. 日が昇る is the sun rising, 上昇 is a rise in prices or temperature, and 昇進 is a promotion.

Used in 上昇 (joushou, rise), 昇進 (shoushin, promotion), and 昇る (noboru, to rise)
