The story
Bamboo slips standing side by side, tied by a cord running across: a book as it was before paper. 冊 counts books, so 一冊 is one book and 何冊 how many, and a 冊子 is a slim booklet.
Used in 一冊 (issatsu, one book), 冊子 (sasshi, booklet), and 別冊 (bessatsu, separate volume/supplement)
