The story

Three mouths (口) stacked together: multiple items gathered for inspection and judgment. In Japanese commerce, 品質 (hinshitsu, quality) is sacred. The concept of 品 extends beyond merchandise to mean "dignity" and "class": a product reflects the character of its maker.

Used in 商品 (shouhin, merchandise), 品質 (hinshitsu, quality), and 作品 (sakuhin, work/piece)
