What is Kanji?
Kanji (漢字) are the Chinese-derived characters used in the Japanese writing system alongside hiragana and katakana. There are over 2,000 commonly used kanji in Japanese, but learning just the basics opens up a surprisingly large portion of everyday Japanese text.
Today's kanji, 針 (hari), means "needle" and comes from the Tools & Objects collection.
The best way to learn kanji is through daily, consistent exposure, which is exactly what the Kanji of the Day feature is designed for. Come back tomorrow to discover a new character and build your Japanese vocabulary one word at a time.
