The story

A tree (木) with a single mark (卜): wood left unworked, a sense 朴 took over from 樸. 素朴 is simple and unadorned, a 素朴な疑問 is an honest, naive question, and in the Hida mountains miso is grilled on a big 朴 magnolia leaf.

Used in 素朴 (soboku, simple/naive), 純朴 (junboku, simple-hearted), and 朴訥 (bokutotsu, simple and reticent)
