The story
A plain frame (几) with a single dot (丶) inside: about as ordinary as a kanji gets. 平凡 is ordinary, a 凡人 is an everyday person, 非凡 is anything but, and a 凡ミス is a careless, avoidable slip.
Used in 平凡 (heibon, ordinary), 非凡 (hibon, extraordinary), and 凡人 (bonjin, ordinary person)
