The story

Threads (糸) divided (分) and tangled: things lost in the muddle. 紛れる is to blend into a crowd, 紛失 is losing something, the word on lost-property forms, and 紛争 is a conflict that has gotten hopelessly tangled.

Used in 紛失 (funshitsu, loss of an item), 紛争 (funsou, conflict/dispute), and 紛らわしい (magirawashii, confusingly similar)
