The story

A hand (扌) beside 由, like a field (田) with a shoot poking out the top: pull, and out it comes. 抽選 is drawing lots, the way Japan hands out concert tickets, 抽出 is extracting, and 抽象, drawn out of the details, is abstract.

Used in 抽選 (chuusen, lottery/drawing), 抽象的 (chuushouteki, abstract), and 抽出 (chuushutsu, extraction)
