The story

Words (言) drawn out long (永): poetry chanted slowly. 詠む is to compose a poem, a haiku or a tanka, and every January the palace's 歌会始 has poems on a set theme chanted aloud in the slow, old style.

Used in 詠む (yomu, to compose a poem), 詠唱 (eishou, chanting/aria), and 朗詠 (rouei, reciting poetry aloud)
