The story

Originally sugarcane boiling in a pot, borrowed long ago to mean "the one who." Attach it to any craft and a person appears: 医者 the one who heals, 学者 the one who studies, 忍者 the one who endures.

Used in 医者 (isha, doctor), 若者 (wakamono, young person), and 学者 (gakusha, scholar)
