The story

A person (亻) and the first bite of a blade into wood: making begins with a single cut. Everything crafted in Japan carries it: 作品 a finished work, 手作り handmade, the maker's pride in both.

Used in 作る (tsukuru, to make), 作品 (sakuhin, a work/piece), and 作文 (sakubun, composition)
