The story
Words (言) beside a short-tailed bird (隹): picture calling into the trees, 'who's there?'. 誰 is 'who', 誰か is someone, and 誰も with a negative is nobody; it joined the official 常用 kanji list only in 2010, so older newspapers and textbooks spell it だれ.
Used in 誰 (dare, who), 誰か (dareka, someone), and 誰も (daremo, nobody/everyone)
