The story

Thread (糸) beside 申: the Shuowen says 紳 was a broad silk sash, the kind worn by officials. Now it lives in 紳士, gentleman, on department store floors selling 紳士服, menswear, and in 紳士淑女の皆様, ladies and gentlemen.

Used in 紳士 (shinshi, gentleman), 紳士服 (shinshifuku, menswear), and 紳士協定 (shinshi kyoutei, gentleman's agreement)
