The story

Picture a dog (犭) set to guard (守) the game: hunting with hounds. In Japan 狩り gathers more than game: いちご狩り is strawberry picking, and 紅葉狩り, hunting autumn leaves, is simply going out to admire them.

Used in 狩り (kari, hunting), 紅葉狩り (momijigari, autumn-leaf viewing), and 狩猟 (shuryou, hunting)
