The story
Earth (土) beside 屏, the screen in 屏風: an earthen wall that screens a house from the street. Japan made this kanji itself. 塀 is the wall around a property, from the 土塀 of old samurai lanes to a concrete ブロック塀.
Used in 塀 (hei, wall/fence), 土塀 (dobei, earthen wall), and 板塀 (itabei, wooden fence)
