The story

Grain (禾) brought into the house (家): the harvest that keeps a family fed. 稼ぐ is to earn, 出稼ぎ is leaving home to work far away, as Tohoku farmers once did each winter, and a machine that is 稼働中 is up and running.

Used in 稼ぐ (kasegu, to earn), 出稼ぎ (dekasegi, working away from home), and 稼働 (kadou, operation)
