The story

A dish (皿) under bright (明) sun and moon: in ancient China, lords sealed oaths with blood from a sacrificial bowl, the heavens as witness. 盟 is an alliance: 同盟 between nations, 加盟 joining a league, and 連盟 a federation.

Used in 同盟 (doumei, alliance), 加盟 (kamei, joining/affiliation), and 連盟 (renmei, league/federation)
