The story

Grass (艹) over a vine twisting down to water (氺): wisteria, climbing and spilling in purple clusters. Spring crowds gather under 藤棚 trellises, and 藤 runs through Japan's surnames: 佐藤, the most common of all, plus 伊藤, 加藤 and 斎藤.

Used in 藤 (fuji, wisteria), 藤棚 (fujidana, wisteria trellis), and 佐藤 (satou, Satō)
