The story

A heart (心) under a figure curled up on its side (夗): picture resentment coiled tight and brooding. 怨 is the grudge that outlives you: 怨霊 is a vengeful ghost, as in the horror film 呪怨, The Grudge, and 怨念 a deep-rooted hatred.
