The story

Picture 保, to keep, wrapped inside a robe (衣, split top and bottom): a robe of honor for someone worth praising. 褒める is to praise, shoppers treat themselves to 自分へのご褒美, a little reward, and the state's 褒章 medals honor artists and scientists.

Used in 褒める (homeru, to praise), ご褒美 (gohoubi, reward/treat), and 褒章 (houshou, medal of honor)
