The story

A tree (木) beside ten thousand (万) under a cliff (厂): 栃, made in Japan, is the horse chestnut. A popular explanation: ten (と) times a thousand (ち) is ten thousand, so とち. It lives in 栃木, Tochigi, home of Nikko.

Used in 栃木 (tochigi, Tochigi), 栃の木 (tochi no ki, Japanese horse chestnut), and 栃餅 (tochimochi, horse-chestnut rice cake)
