The story
Words (言) with the weight of an emperor (帝): a final verdict, no appeal. In Buddhism 諦 is truth, as in the Four Noble Truths, and 諦める, to give up, is popularly traced to an old verb for making clear: seeing things as they are and letting go.
Used in 諦める (akirameru, to give up), 諦め (akirame, resignation), and 諦観 (teikan, resigned acceptance)
